How did the idea for 'Milos' come about?
Previously I had spent a good amount of time in a retirement home in america - and had come to better understand the struggle families face as time takes its "toll" on loved ones. Anyway I became captured by this thinly veiled, undeniable despondence that permeated these places. The tasteless smell of mashed potatoes, the generic pastel color scheme of the wall paper, the big white van that carted the community around for occasional adventures/grocery store runs... And how no one is able to avoid this backwards regression of sorts: it is after all, natural on some level.

Then I met Tory who was at the same film school - FAMU in Prague (Czech Republic). Our senses of humor clicked and we both thought we could comedically riff off of these rather depressing themes. We were also interested in the idea of literal role reversal - to spice things up and make things at least somewhat more experimental. Tory thought of the idea to have our main character be a bad-ass who rebels at night: graffitting walls and acting like a teenager when no one was looking. Then I think we pretty much simultaneously asked each other - what if it wasn't a secret.

If Milos hadn't learned to skateoboard what would he have learned?
Accept your situation passively. Sports are dangerous anyway..

You're living in Germany right now. Have you had a chance to interact with senior citizen there and do you plan on putting more European senior citizens in your future movies?
For some reason old ladies love to engage me in conversation. Practically instantly. I almost can't avoid it. I've gotten a lot of life advice. Like its just got to gush out... So maybe some of that advice will find its way into future work...

What is coming up in the Erica Gorochow universe?
Collaboration! Adventure! Struggle! Changing my mind! Figuring it out...

There is a little spark of guilt. It is a millisecond in length but measured in hours of implication. It’s that little twinge you feel when you type the all too familiarly loaded words - YouTube or MySpace or Friendster or Facebook. The letters merge together to form the names of some of the most time consuming entities that exist in the fantastically grand and deluded world of cyberspace. You go on for a second and you’re there for minutes, possibly hours blindly absorbing the randomness. And that little spark, your conscience, if you will indulge me, is a long forgotten memory.

Let’s analyze for a bit, shall we? Why does this guilt exist at all? It is because your conscience recognizes the end result from spending your finite supply of time endlessly clicking away at the same bulletin or inserting the same smiley into a useless comment or confirming friendship from a person you have not talked to in, at least, seven years and at most ten years or watching the same kid fall off his skateboard, all in a reincarnated form is nothingness. . . It all claims to connect you but it really flings you farther and farther from the actual world.

So, what’s the solution? Infuse your time and your life with short film, with quality . . . It is fiction that allows us to step into a different time and place and thereby increase our life experiences and develop an understanding and compassion for something we might not have. And short film is a snippet of a time and place will change you and give your conscience something to dance about because it is not shrouded in emptiness and laden with nothingness. It is something small, or short, if you will . . . but it is something worthwhile . . .
